On this day in 1999, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse completed its 2,900-foot move to safety from the encroaching sea, ending a 23-day journey inland without the loss of a single brick — the tallest brick lighthouse ever relocated.

Dare County has taken its first step toward turning the former Channel Bass Restaurant property in Hatteras Village into a waterfront park, authorizing staff to pursue a state grant application.
