Dare County is preparing to place roughly 2 million cubic yards of sand along Buxton's oceanfront and repair the southernmost of the village's three Navy-built groins, part of a decades-long history of shoreline engineering on that stretch of Hatteras Island. The project follows years of erosion that has repeatedly reshaped the beach and threatened Highway 12. It builds on a long line of efforts, dating back generations, to hold the shoreline in place against the Atlantic.
