A piece of Banks history: the wrecks of the USS Huron and the steamer Metropolis, within months of each other in 1877 and 1878, took heavy losses of life off these shores. The tragedies pushed Congress to fund the chain of life-saving stations that once stood every few miles along the Banks, the beginning of what became the Coast Guard's presence here.
