Researchers are piecing together why the Outer Banks have become a central waypoint on the great white shark's East Coast migration route, after decades in which the species barely registered along this stretch of coast. The renewed presence ties to warming waters and rebounding seal and fish populations that draw the sharks close to shore each winter and spring. Tagging data has shown large adults and juveniles alike passing through Outer Banks waters on a predictable seasonal corridor. The findings give researchers a clearer picture of a migration pattern that was largely invisible just a generation ago.
