A piece of Banks history: in 1846, a single powerful hurricane tore open both Hatteras and Oregon inlets in one stroke, remaking the shape of the Banks and opening the sounds to the sea. The inlets carved that year still shape how water — and boats — move through the Outer Banks today.
Yesterday the Brief asked whether North Carolina should toll the ferry routes serving Hatteras and Ocracoke starting in 2027. Of five votes, 60% said yes and 40% said no.
